The Negative Effects Of Addiction And Crime To The Society

by Ericka Lopez

Everyone wants to live in a peaceful community. Nobody wants to witness a horrible scene of crime in their lifetime. Families secure their homes and police officers are called to answer the crimes so that justice will be served. We do not live in a perfect world however, crime will always be present in the society. Some of these crimes are connected to other problems. Crime related to drug addiction is higher in the recent years. The Bureau of Justice Statistics has noted that 17 percent of state prisoners have admitted of committing crime to obtain money for drug use. Eighteen percent of federal offenders have also admitted of theft due to drug use. In the recent years, funding for measures to reduce drug addiction has also increased. In 2008, a budget of $12.9 billion was requested to reduce drug abuse.

Drugs like benzodiazepines have altering effects on the central nervous system. People who use this kind of drug feel highly active. They don't feel inhibited in doing things like stealing, shoplifting and fast driving beyond speed limits. Cases of vehicular accidents related to drug intoxication are also high. This type of medicine is also known to be used by serial killers and other murderers. Research has found that using benzodiazepines result to aggression and violence among its users. Those who have used this kind of drug are most likely been in contact with the police or have been charged by criminal behaviour. This has been based on the study conducted by the Australian government.

The problem of drug addiction is serious and vital. It's not only the addict who is being helped when this problem is addressed but also the people around him. Cities will be more peaceful and less chaotic when the problem of drug addiction is eliminated. Crime related to drug addiction will become extinct if this problem is addressed. But this is still an impossible scenario. What can be done in the present is to prevent people young and old to engage in illegal drug use and to enroll drug addicts in drug treatment centers.

Prevention is always better than cure but if the problem already exists, measures should be taken to stop the increase of drug abuse cases or to at least minimize it. As part of helping reduce crime, the government includes measures to address the causes of crime. Those who have been convicted especially below the age of 18 are required to visit and attend drug treatment centers. In this way, the future of the offender can still be chartered to productivity.
