With recent statistics indicating that the over 50s aren’t using the internet to its full potential, online travel retailer Cooptravelshop.co.uk has compiled a guide to the internet, specifically for the over 50s.According to the Office for National Statistics, those in the 50-64 age group spend almost double on package holidays, compared to those under 30 and well over the national average. However only a small proportion of this expenditure is through travel websites. With the over 50s being one of the fastest growing groups of internet users, Cooptravelshop.co.uk has stepped in to help them build on their web skills, providing some easy steps on how to make the most of the fantastic research tool.Daniel Forster, General Manager for United Co-op Travel Group Web Division, said: We have compiled a glossary of internet terms as well as some useful information on internet security and techniques for safe shopping online across a number of industries, together with guidelines on emailing, chat rooms and web forums. The guide, which can be found at www.cooptravelshop.co.uk/over50s, also includes a section on how to research and buy your holiday online, highlighting somes do’s and don’ts of travel websites such as making sure the holiday is protected by the relevant travel industry trade organisations such as ABTA and ATOL.In 2005, we saw a healthy rise in people over the age of 50 visiting and booking through our site but judging by these statistics from the Office for National Statistics, the industry still has a role to play in educating people how to make better use of the internet, especially when buying holidays onlineFigures from the Office for National Statistics state that those in the 50-64 age group spend on average £17 a week on package holidays, compared to just £8.60 for those under 30. The national average is £12.10.
