Behavior Modification- Overcoming Violence

by Larry Lloyd

To understand violence and the anger that pushes it, one has to know the four key root causes of anger. Even more than just that, one has to understand the deepest sense of who we really are, our personal way of being.

There are two ways to be; responsive or resistant. A responsive person is open and kind to those around them; while, a resistant person is closed off and rude. Resistant, self-deceived criminals commit violence from the deepest sense of who they are.

-People commit violence in their hearts and minds before doing it with their hands.

-Violence is not necessarily a hit, but a way of being.

-To be violent is a choice.

-Nonviolence, just like violence, is deeper than behavior.

-Violent people separate themselves from the feelings of others.

-Those who are resistant believe, I violate other people by treating them as an object. In this process I elevate myself.

-Resistant individuals allow this thought pattern into their lives, I batter for control without mercy or compassion.

-"In violating my children, I destroy future generations".

-If others are violent towards me while I'm violating them, it justifies my actions

-In the resistant way of being, I invite problems into my life, not solutions."

-Violent people endeavor to portray themselves in ways that make the wrong they do appear to be right.

-In the resistant way of being, I impede the flow of lifes light and energy. I repel others and live a life filled with self.

-Violence springs from the very essence of who I am, and who I am destroys me.

Violence in society comes about because of the citizen's way of being. To remove violent behavior, an individual must change from a resistive person to a responsive person. That requires a change of being.

A program that does not help people at their deepest level will, without a doubt, fail. Anger management and behavior modification techniques are just short-term fixes that dont sink deep enough to make lasting changes. Cognitive restructuring, when performed correctly, is a proven intervention that allows individuals to become self aware and thus more eager to change their personal way of being. Cognitive restructuring is not force but an invitation to change. It intervenes at the deepest level where lasting changes can take place.
