Tax Tips for Internet Marketers

by Carlos Summerhill

No, you cannot get out of paying taxes as an internet marketer. Anybody who told you otherwise is lying! And yes, the IRS really is paying attention. If the Internal Revenue Service has reason to believe that you are not reporting the right income on your taxes, then they have reason to audit you. But, don't let this freak you out. If you do not lie about your income and expenses, then you should be fine. Also, this will involve sending the right tax to the IRS on a yearly basis. Do not feel threatened by all of this. The following tax tips can help you with your situation.

The basic rule of thumb when it comes to income you earn through Internet Marketing is that thirty percent of what you make is going to need to be paid to the IRS. The actual amounts, of course, will fluctuate with your income. Thirty percent is a great standard to set; so tuck this much away every time you make a little money. You have choices, you can hold it for a balloon payment when you file your taxes, or the IRS will gladly take estimated tax payments throughout the year. This will enable you to pay your tax bill down before it is actually due. If you paid more than you owed, you will be reimbursed! Keep all bills. It doesn't matter if the bill is for your electricity, your cell phone or your internet service. Keep all bills. If you are an internet marketer working out of your home, some of these bills can be deducted on your taxes. Don't assume, though, that you can write off the whole bill. If you surf the internet on your own, then you should think about not taking this as a deduction. Talk to an accounting pro and find out what can be claimed on your income taxes.

If you are considering filing your own taxes, you would be well advised to begin the process as early as possible. Before you became an Internet Marketer (freelancer) you probably could easily file your taxes with a 1040EZ form; you now face a more difficult process and more involved tax laws. This process is compounded with a diverse assortment of schedules, forms and convoluted laws and formulas. If you are able to prepare for this process beforehand and understand what you are up against, you will be likely to have good luck when the time comes.

Those who are involved in Internet Marketing are sometimes a little afraid of the tax situation. Therefore, you can understand why so many internet marketers would like to stay voluntarily unknowing when it comes to these circumstances.

The truth is, though, that when you pay attention, do your research and keep track of the details you should be just fine. If you are not accurate with your facts and figures, you could be setting yourself up for disappointment. If possible, you need to relax when it comes to doing your taxes; they may seem overwhelming at first, but eventually you will have a wealth of experience under your belt.
