What Blinds Are Best For Your Home?

by Jamie Simpson

Blinds are great way to add style and energy savings to many different rooms in the house. It is just a matter of finding the right one for the right room. Many people may think that blinds need to be installed by a professional company but this is certainly not the case. With the right tools and a small amount of knowledge, any homeowner can easily install their own blinds.

Various rooms would require various types of blinds. For example in the kitchen, the blinds will need to be stain resistant and easy to clean. Vinyl or wooden blinds that have a painted and smooth surface are best and fabric ones should usually be avoided in this room. If a softer touch is desired, a fabric valance could easily be installed above the blinds.

For the master bathroom and any other bathrooms, a privacy blind is essential for obvious reasons. In the bathrooms, the blinds will need to be durable and ones that are not affected by humidity and water. Vinyl or treated wooden blinds are best, due to the amount of moisture in these rooms. If very concerned with privacy, the addition of a roller shade behind the blinds may be necessary.

In bedrooms, blackout blinds are usually preferred. Many people need complete darkness to sleep and these blinds will help to achieve that.

Finally, in the living room, the homeowner is able to be more creative when it comes to fabric blinds. These should coordinate with the surrounding furniture and decor of the room and truly help to dress up this space. One type of blind that works well in a living room would be bamboo or wooden blinds. The interesting textures of these add a unique characteristic to any window. For some rooms, the wooden blinds may be too dark in color. Care should be taken when choosing this type.

When it comes to measuring and fitting the blinds, it is best and cheapest if the window is a standard size as blinds can be purchased right off the shelf. If the window is an odd size or particularly large, custom blinds may need to be purchased. These will generally be more expensive but the durability of the blind means that it will last for a long time.

With installation, the mounting hardware needs to be securely installed and installed. For heavier wooden blinds, center attachment points may be necessary. For lighter weight blinds, this may not be the case. Regardless of the style of blind that is installed, it should be properly attached to the window.

With a little bit of research and careful planning, the perfect set of blinds can be purchased for any room in the home.
