Volunteering Abroad Checklist

by Evans Arao

Many people this year are planning to volunteer abroad during the summer. To ensure a successful volunteer trip one should plan early in advance. Poor planning on the part of the volunteer, leads to costly mistakes and in worst case scenarios cancellation of the trips. As with travelling to a new place, there are some considerations that the volunteers should think about before leaving. The considerations are certain things that they should have accomplished by the time they are leaving for the host country.

As a guide to those who want to embark on this journey here are a few things one should do or look into before leaving their home countries:

Setting up a timeline for the trip is crucial to the planning process. This timeline will give the volunteer information on what needs to be done by when. Many opportunities are lost due to last minute rushing for example paying high flight fares. With an appropriate timeline volunteers would know what they need to do first, placing high priority items, and what can be accomplished last during the last stages. When one uses a timeline wisely, stress is avoided and proper planning can take place. Deadlines can be easily made, especially for things like Visa, fundraising efforts, Vaccinations, e.t.c. Time management will give you the confidence that your volunteer abroad plans will work out.

Getting insurance is highly recommended. Travel insurance is important for a variety of factors namely: medical coverage; taking care of trip cancelation and missed flights; lost luggage; delayed luggage; travel delays due to weather; and much more. When the volunteer is choosing which travel insurance to pick, they should consider: the length of stay in the host country; the host country; the kind of work; what the insurance covers or not; the travel insurance policies; how many times you will be volunteering abroad in a year and any present pre-existing medical conditions.

Getting the volunteers finances in order is important. There are some volunteers who volunteer abroad for a period of a week and some for 3 years or longer. As they will be spending money abroad they need to inform their banks and credit card companies of their new residence. They should find out if the credit cards or debits cards will work in the country they are in and also the legal restrictions or ramifications of using them. There are some volunteers who require to give out the power of attorney to a relative or friend to manage their finances when they are abroad. Considerations should be made on how their bills at home would be paid while they are abroad. Having enough money for the volunteer abroad program is useful and how the money would be spent while they are in the host country. That means making and sticking to a budget. There are many other things that the volunteer should consider while they are planning to leave for their charity work abroad. This should be used as a basic guideline of what should be aware of before departing.
