Is Your Breast Augmentation Surgeon A Fraud?

by Dr Kourosh Tavakoli

Are you aware of what to look out for when searching for a surgeon to perform breast augmentation surgery on you? Did you know that there are phony plastic surgeons as well as qualified ones?

So, how can you tell the qualified from the fake? Here are red flags that should instantly alert you that the surgeon you are dealing with is a quack.

1. The Surgeon isn't Certified by any Regulatory Board of Plastic Surgeons

This is the number one red flag as it is mandatory that all plastic surgeons be registered with a regulatory board of plastic surgeons in any particular country. If the medical professional cannot prove that he/ she is a member of any reputable oversight organization, then you are better off looking for a plastic surgeon elsewhere.

2. Beware of Discount Coupons or Cheap Prices

If you were doing grocery shopping or getting your nails done, then a discount would make sense. However, why would you want to bargain for the price of something as serious as surgery? Furthermore, why would your surgeon be so eager to give you a discount for his/ her services? An established reputable surgeon will not allow you to haggle for cheaper prices, but will ensure that you get the best value for your money.

3. Avoid Surgeons That Offer to Do More Cosmetic Surgery on You Than You Are Comfortable With

During the initial consultation, it's common for the patient and surgeon to talk about the best options available for that particular patient. However, it's unlikely that a certified and qualified surgeon would suggest that you have more cosmetic surgery done. Usually, a qualified surgeon will only discuss and expound on what you need. When a surgeon is desperately trying to get you to have more cosmetic surgery done, then he/ she is simply looking to get more money out of you.

4. Be Wary of Plastic Surgeons That Advertise Heavily on TV or Radio

A little bit of advertising does not hurt, but it is definitely a red flag if a surgeon does a lot of heavy advertisement on the radio and TV. This usually means that he/ she does not have enough patients who can bring in referrals through word of mouth. It is even more of a concern if the surgeon has no patients to give testimonials in the first place. Hence, the more advertisements you see from a cosmetic surgeon, the lower the quality of work you can expect.

5. Surgeons That Lack Hospital Privileges

This is another red flag because most hospitals will only offer privileges if the surgeon is skilled and has more than adequate training. The surgeon also needs to be certified before being granted privileges. Hospital privileges come in handy should there be any complications that would arise during surgery, since the patient can then be taken to that hospital and get treated.

Be on the lookout for these tell-tale red flags of surgeons who should never practice in the first place.
