Brand New College Grant Information for the School Year
President George W. Bush proposed funding for a couple of college grants called the Academic Competitiveness Grant and National Smart Grant. There is around $700 million dollars set aside just for these grants. The purpose of the grant money is to encourage students to work towards a major in the math, technical, and science fields. Both the National Smart and Academic Competitiveness grants have taken effect for this school year. Each student grant has different requirements to become eligible. The items below are an example of the requirements to become eligible. Students may need to meet additional requirements before receiving college grants.
The Academic Competitiveness Grant is an award given to both freshman and sophomore college students. First year students can be awarded up to $750 toward their tuition fees and eligible sophomore students could be awarded around $1300. Below you'll find the list of eligibility requirements for the Academic Competitiveness Grant.
Students are eligible to receive the Academic Competitiveness Grant if:
They're currently enlisted full-time as a freshman or sophomore student in a two or four year program.
They are eligible for the Pell Grant. (Students who are given the Academic Competitiveness Grant can also receive a Pell Grant to go towards their college expenses.).
They finished a strenuous plan of study in high school according to the national education standards and requirements.
They earned a cumulative 3.0 grade point average during their first year. (This applies to sophomore students)
They're currently a United States citizen.
They graduated from senior high later than January 1, 2006 for freshmen and January 1, 2005 for sophomores.
The National Smart Grant is an award given to third and fourth year students going to college. Third and fourth year students may receive up to $4000. Below you'll find a list of requirements to become eligible for the National Smart Grant.
Students may be awarded the National Smart Grant if:
They are currently enrolled as a full time third or fourth year college student in a four-year degree.
They are qualified to receive the Pell Grant. (Students who receive the National Smart Grant may also apply the Pell Grant to their tuition expenses.).
They're a U.S. citizen.
They maintained a cumulative 3.0 grade point average.
They are planning to graduate with a degree in science, engineering, mathematics, technology, or a critical foreign language.
For college students who do not meet the guidelines for the Academic Competitiveness Grant or the National Smart Grant, there are other college government grants out there. Requirements are based upon the type of grant. Students can receive a college grant based on academic achievement, financial need, or athletic talent. Other students may receive a college grant based on their major, ethnic background, or religion. The following are a few pointers on how to better your possibility of receiving a grant for college:
