The Nicest Thing You Can Do For Your Garden Is To Buy Compost Bins
I was visiting my Grandfather's house last May and while giving us a tour of his garden, he showed us his compost bins. I know that this is hardly a reason to jump for joy, but I was profoundly changed by this experience in a way that has been of great benefit to my family. The story begins with us enjoying a meal with my Grandparents that involved my Grandmother's latest quiche recipe. As we were sitting there, eating our food, I asked them what they had been up to in the last few months.
This prompted my Grandfather to delightedly inform us of even the tiniest details of the long hours he spent gardening and a long list of which plants he was growing and which ones he planned to introduce. From hearing him talk, I got the feeling that gardening was more than a hobby to him.
You can likely guess that once our meal was over, our next task was a visit to the garden that had been the main subject of our dinner conversation. From the beginning, I was absolutely taken with how enormous the garden was. In size it appeared nearly as big as the house with a high enclosure surrounding it that was designed to make sure that deer stayed out. What met my sight when we walked through the fence were an astonishing variety of plant life that included cabbage, spinach, carrots, potatoes, corn, asparagus, and radishes.
And then, as we ended our examinations of the garden we spotted compost bins. My Grandfather went through explaining the process of compost creation which involved him using leftover food and bits and leavings of various vegetables. This was a way that anyone could grow some sustainable vegetables that would not only be a healthy addition to anyone's diet, but it would probably reduce grocery bills.
On the long drive away from my Grandparent's house we had a chance to analyze between ourselves what kinds of benefits we would get if we made a garden. As a result of our discussion, we made the choice to get all the necessary supplies that would allow us to build a top-notch garden of our own. Once we had a chance, we took our truck down to the local supply store and loaded up on every supply that we could need, including a rain barrel that my wife suggested would be a good investment. Quickly enough we saw some little green sprouts that promised to turn into a sumptuous salad within a month or so.
