The Top Technological Inventions of the Last 40 Years

Greatest Tech Inventions Since the 70s

by Sam Qam

Ok so there have been a great deal of inventions in the last 40 years. Technology and science have made major leaps in an age when computers and electronic technology have been the forerunners in healthcare, entertainment, globalisation and even the understanding of the universe as a whole. But aside from such a grandiose appeal here are the top techy inventions that have shaped the past 40 years.

The Internet (1982)

A massive transitional creation that has reshaped how we communicate and store information. There is some debate over exactly when the internet was established but what is never debated is its overwhelming influence on how society functions. The internet is effectively a revolution in itself and cloud computing is the staple for almost all businesses in the future.

Mobile Phones (1973)

Do you remember the mobile phones from the 80s? Even then the technology appeared somewhat in its infancy arriving in a form the size of a brick and pursued only by the most tech savvy businessmen. Nowadays, everyone and their dog have a mobile phone and communication has evolved. The ability to be in touch with friends and relatives at any time anywhere is accepted as an almost basic human right by many, but few now appreciate or even fathom the concept of agreeing to meet someone somewhere without the use of a phone at all.

The Sony Walkman (1979)

Ah the humble Walkman. If you were a child in the 80s and early 90s who didn't have a Walkman then you were nobody. Being able to take your favourite music with you anywhere was ground-breaking and paved the way for all mobile music right up to MP3s.

GPS (1978)

GPS has often been courted controversially as people envision it as the 'eye in the sky' watching your every move. Those less paranoid amongst us see how GPS has shaped the logistics industry with supply chain software and the resulting supply chain visibility capable of managing international transport of goods and services. Not to mention the useful (if sometimes infuriating sat nav).

DNA Fingerprinting (1984)

The last but by no means least comes down to you. Your DNA that is. It was as far back as the 50s when James Watson and Francis Crick cracked the DNA code, but it was 25 years later when one of the most important practical uses for DNA recognition was established in fingerprinting. The ability to determine exact evidence of someone's crime through their unique DNA was and still is groundbreaking.
