The Way To Stop The Golf Slice!

by Gustaf Eriksson

Slicing the ball is probably the most common fault you'll see on tee.

Hitting the ball forcefully, with the aim to drive it 240, 250 yards or further, and then watch it curve into the rough is frustrating, and doesn't help your score.

Is there a simple way to avoid slicing?

There is - you want to get a small draw instead - to hit the ball to the left. Doing this will actually make your shots go further by up to 27 yards!

Here's how to make you stop slicing from tee:

Check that your set-up is perfect to start with:

Check that you are parallell to the target line. Check that your back is slightly tilted to the right. Also check that your hands are ahead of the ball, the opposite is a recipe for disaster! And look at how your grip is. It should be strong, but not tense. A soft grip will let your hands "flop" around themselves, and the release of your hands won't happen.

Here's a simple tip: wear a wristwatch on your left wrist - on the inside! On the follow - up the watch face should be visible.

This ensures your arms and hands "roll over" the correct way.

Here are some good drills:

Hit shots with your feet together - sounds funny, but the logic of it is that you just have to release your hands, otherwise the ball will definitely go to the right.

Here's another easy drill - go swing on an uphill slope, that is below the ball. This forces you to swing so the club head automatically comes from the inside, giving you the draw you want.

If you consistently slice your ball, then the quickest way to start curving the ball the other way is to actively try to over correct by actually setting up your stance to the right, and then closing the club face to compensate.

Do this and you'll find you soon will stop slicing.

But remember this is a drill to change your brain and muscle memory, meaning your old habits get weakened!

Don't think that it is the way to swing in the future - you will be very disappointed if you do ...

To change a golf swing is not easy, because it is a complicated manoeuver and you can't do it right if you think too much about it!

It has to become automatic. To summarise:: check the points mentioned above, swing until it feels natural and then let go and enjoy the game.

Your swing will improve!
