The Books Of Enid Blyton - Noddy, The Famous Five and Secret Seven

by Peter Bruce

Enid Blyton's eight hundred or so story books have been put into more than 90 different languages and are enjoyed the world over by kids of all ages. Her unbelievably impressive production of eight hundred books throughout her writing career are virtually entirely focused on various prevailing themes amongst the young, ranging from preschool toy stories to fantasies about early childhood independence from adults.

Enid Blyton is perhaps best celebrated for just 3 main series and characters - Noddy, a boy made of wood who lives in Toy Town, Secret Seven and Famous Five. Perhaps the most famous of Enid Blyton's books, Noddy was firmly written for infants and followed the adventures of a runaway boy made of wood. A good, friend Big Ears gives him assistance to move into Toy Town, where he travels around in a small red and yellow car, and unravels mysteries in the small community. Although he wasn't the writer's main focus, Noddy came to be the most successful, especially after it was launched on BBC TV starting in 1956. It was immediately a big success with kids between the ages of 2 and 6 years, and continued like that through the 70s. The simplified version of the Noddy adventures have aided innumerable small children to read their very first words and letters.

The books Blyton wrote for older children were ofttimes centered around the formation of a secret group, or club that was stringently for members only - unquestionably no adults! They would rendezvous in a concealed club house, often in a tree house, or another difficult to find place in the woods. Local conundrums that had the village's ham-fisted policemen totally bewildered were life's blood to them, as they took great delight in being separate from grown ups, and also showing how much more intelligent they were.

The Famous Five are in reality four children and a dog who experience exciting adventures - the perfect children's daydreams, in a secure world where tea-time is at five o'clock and everything is stable. Georgina owns a pooch called Timmy who runs everywhere with his mistress. Her father also owns Kirrin Island, which Georgina uses for an adventure playground and hideaway (although everyone knows where she is!). Uncle Quentin and Aunt Fanny (Mother and Father to Georgina) try to keep an eye on the fivesome but mostly seem blissfully unaware of their concealed lives of adventure, secret meetings and mystery solving.
