Feather Flags For Every Occasion - But Beware The Planners

by Richard Johnson

Feather flags are colourful, practical and fun. But you need to be a bit careful when it comes to using them in public places. The beauty of feather flags is that they can be supplied with sturdy bases to make them completely portable. They can be erected at will, and taken down and removed just as easily.

It's because they are so much more convenient than hoisting a conventional flag up a flagpole that they have become so popular. You've probably noticed feather flags yourself when out and about on your travels. Some of the more obvious locations include car dealers and showrooms. These are buildings that usually have long frontages, so a row of strategically placed flags can create a dramatic impact and enhance the brand identity of the vehicles on sale.

They don't have to be all-singing, all-dancing applications though. A row of pure white feather flags can enhance the frontage of your wedding venue, creating an almost sculptural effect because they are simply there for decorative, rather than advertising purposes.

Take any big open space, and feather flags can add to the ambience of the occasion. The wide expanse of a sandy beach can be very effectively used for a long row of flags to promote the forthcoming regatta. They can very easily be erected in snowy situations on mountainsides. What better way of delineating the course of any sporting event, at the same time as getting an advertising message across to a captive audience of spectators?

It's not only big business with big promotional budgets that can take advantage of feather flags though. They're ideal for the smaller one-man-band type of operation, and they're so convenient because they are so portable. An ice cream van owner could quite feasibly pack one, or more into his van to help his day's sales by temporarily erecting them on the seafront, or on top of cliffs, in laybys, or at big event venues where there's a lot of competition for business. They stand out and they get noticed.

But do beware of falling foul of planning regulations in public areas. Feather flags are becoming more commonly utilised outside shop fronts and, if they do have temporary bases, they can cause an obstruction to pedestrians. And planners also have notorious reputations for objecting to anything that interferes with the attractive visual perception of their amenities. Let's hope that feather flags will keep the world looking bright and colourful for many years to come.
