Camera Monitoring Using Mobile Phones

by Wesley Fernley

The hustle and bustle of everyday life is often made easier thanks in part to the convenience offered by cellular phones. In order to keep pace with the world's increasing demands to stay connected via mobile mediums, it is now possible for various IP network cameras to send live video feeds across the 3G or Wi-Fi networks, directly to most Smartphone and Android devices. This emerging technology enables camera users freedom to control their cameras, regardless of their locations.

What Type of Equipment is Necessary?

A Smartphone or Android device such as iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Blackberry can all be connected to an IP network camera. Most mobile phones with Internet connectivity capabilities are capable of viewing camera snapshots as email attachments. However, in order to view live camera feeds, the latest Smartphone models may be necessary.

Unique Configuration Requirements

If you require little more than random security snapshots to be delivered to your phone via an external email account, than configuration should be relatively straight forward, and completed directly from the IP camera. Additionally, it may be possible to tend to configuration requirements from any chosen network surveillance monitoring application. Some of the most common configuration options include snapshots being sent based on a preset schedule and snapshots being sent as a result of motion detection. It is possible to configure motion detection capabilities through a built-in sensor or through any number of external devices connected to the IP camera.

When it comes to the configuration of live video streams, not only does the option exist to send video directly to most video capable phones and handhelds, but it is also possible to back up data in a high quality video format. This allows users to measure which type of images are most likely to be viewed and, if required, to log into a PC to view certain surveillance feed at a higher resolution.

Mobile applications supporting video surveillance and IP cameras are gaining popularity amongst business and home users. In most instances, the leading IP network cameras come with an array of 'apps' designed to allow access to the camera feed from a mobile device.

Additional configuration may be necessary. This often includes the adjustment of network settings to enable broadcasting.

Additional Remote Access Devices

In order to stay ahead of demand, IP network cameras are not the only devices capable of supporting mobile viewing and control. DVR, NVR, and CCTV models may also facilitate remote access. Usually, the configuration of each device is similar to that of an IP network camera; however, it may be wise to consult owners' manuals in advance.

A Glimpse into the Future

Technology is always improving. The security and surveillance industry is set to experience many significant changes in the coming years. In fact, given the momentum of the advanced changes having already occurred, there is no secret that the ability to view camera feeds and security photos remotely has lead to a reduction in security threats and heightened response times.
