How bad can GAD hit a patient?

Anxiety Disorders - Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

by Ricky Azzuri

Distress, fear and an uneasy state of mind are part of of everyday lives of countless number of anxiety disorders victims from all around the Planet. Ordinary worries and anxiety are an important part of human existence. They help us to refrain from unpleasant and threatening situations and therefore play warning or adaptive role.

The fear is always tied to a specific thing or a situation and anxiety is an indeterminate emotional event. The menace in Generalized Anxiety Disorder is less visible, unclear, therefore it is usually explained as a floating fear. When the fears, worries and anxiety begin to dominate and control persons life, when they begin to seriously interfere with their home, social and business life, then we can say that the individual definitely suffers from some kind of anxiety disorder.

Psychological symptoms of anxiety disorders are irrational fear and trembling, feeling of constant stress or internal turmoil, hard to concentrate. The patient gets annoyed without a reason and can become extremely sensitive to noises. Also, in most cases anxiety disorder victims develop insomnia (they have great difficulties to fall asleep, they wake up many times during the night and may have bad dreams during their sleep.)

Familiar physical symptoms of anxiety disorders are: palpitations or skipping heart beats, feeling difficulties swallowing, dry mouth, problems with breathing (lack of air), chest discomfort, frequent urge to urinate, weakened sexual desire, noise in ears, pins and needles in fingers and toes, trembling hands and many more, depending on the individuals.

Anxiety disorders could be split in 7 main categories: Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder also called Social Phobia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Specific Phobia and Agoraphobia.

The most common characteristics of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) are: frequent irrational worries, anxiety, fear and expectations of something horrible that might happen, which occur most of the days in a span of at least 2-6 months. The victims find uneasy to put under control their worries which are to a great extend exaggerated considering the situation. Adults suffering from GAD mostly worry about everyday situations, the responsibilities in the workplace, finances, family health, unpleasant things that may happen to their children, family members, close friends etc. Irrational fear completely conquer the patients and forces them to feel paralyzed, helpless and under threat.

In general, GAD is in most cases treated by combination of psychotherapy (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy) and medication. Drugs mostly used are Antidepressants from the group of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) and at the start of the therapy Benzodiazepines. Some drugs free treatments and methods developed by ex-sufferers are also producing impressive results and can be bought online.
