Hill stations are predominant in Southeast Asian countries. The Indian subcontinent has many mountain ranges in the north, south and even in central India .The hills are naturally cooler than the hot plains and what better way to cool off in summers in pleasant environs with spectacular landscapes.

The British established most of these resorts to escape from the unbearable summer heat in the plains of India. Most of these hill station resorts are found all over the country, known for their awesome scenic beauty, a placid lake for boating, verdant vales, flowery gardens, leisure walks and a main mall for shopping. The Himalayas have always been an attraction due to their mammoth size as well as their snowcapped mountains and breathtaking picturesque splendor. Kashmir is known as the paradise on earth. The Western Ghats in Tamilnadu, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala too have many resorts where people flock to in summer.

Unlike the hill stations in the north, the others do not have snowcapped mountain ranges or sport like skiing or sledging but they do boast of gushing rivers or waterfalls, dense foliage and wide expanses of blossoms. The hill stations have heavy tourist traffic on weekends and during the summer vacations. In the pre-independence era these hill stations were thronged by the British officers and Indian nobles from the princely states during summer but now everybody wants to push off to the hills.

The main attraction of these hilly retreats are the solace they give to deprived souls in the form of pollution free environment and the abundance of fresh air, with the sparsely populated resorts and far from the maddening crowds of the city. The family resorts still boast of old colonial style architecture that is turned into tourist villas and hotels. These places mesmerize tourists with their vibrant flowers, vast slopes of enchanting tea and coffee plantations, infuse vigor and vitality and refreshes ones senses with their splendor. Adventure lovers can go for trekking, biking or hiking too.

Most of these hilly resort towns have small quaint cottages. Some have abundant rain and people come to experience a walk in the clouds and the invigorating balmy air. The dense forests have teak, cedar and sandalwood trees along with many medicinal herbs and plants growing there. The wild life is restricted to small animals like deer, foxes and wild boars and bird watchers and animal lovers can feast their eyes on them.

Some resorts combine an old world charm combined with the new age needs like spas and adventure sports to cater to the younger generation of tourists who flock these hill stations to get away from their routine life to a novel experience of relaxation and rejuvenation.
