The Choice of Duvet Casings

by Hector Castaneda

The choice of Duvet casings is just endless. Silk, cotton, polyester, you name it and you get it. The Chinese traditionally used silk duvets with casing of coarse threaded fabric. The idea was to let the body heat beyond the casing into the silk inside and thus regulate the heat. Today modern manufacturing techniques afford us a much finer and lighter casing with the above properties. So ultimately it is your choice, what you would like to put on your silk duvets that matters. But before taking the decision here are a few things you should know.

Cotton casings

This is the most preferred material for a silk duvet. There are various grades available in this and you should ask for thread count to better understand the casing. As the thread count goes higher the finer the casing becomes and this would mean it would stitch better and also have a better wearing ability on the duvet. Preferably go for a cotton casting that has a thread count of 240 or more. Lesser thread count would mean cheaper quality with lesser durability. The price of the casing would be directly dependent on the quality of the cotton casing.

Silk Casing

Ideally speaking silk duvets should have silk casing but that would mean the price would skyrocket. A good qual8ty silk duvet in a good quality silk casing would mean prohibitively expensive silk duvets. If you look around in the market you may find silk duvets that have silk casing and yet don't cost a bomb. If so the quality is truly questionable. And the question you should be asking is silk casing's momme. The quality of the silk is graded in terms of Momme and to be of a decent quality the momme rating of the silk casing should be at least 19. Lesser momme rating would mean compromising with the quality and durability of the silk duvet and the silk casing. But if you can really afford it then a silk duvet in a silk casing would be your most priced possession, something you would never want to get out of especially in the winter and something that will probably last you a lifetime.

As important as the silk casings are, the quality of the silk inside the silk duvet is much more important. Ideally the silk duvet should be filled with long fiber mulberry silk. But this makes the product extremely expensive and so manufactures have come up with alternative materials like chopped strand silk which are off cuts of silk or a polyester-silk blend, Good quality silk duvet will have a inspection zip attached, if not you should specifically ask for the quality of the silk filled in the duvet. Normally for other products there is a tog rating however silk duvets are not yet rated by British Standard officials but you can check on how much grams per square meter has been filled into the duvets. A filling of 250gsm to 400gsm which is called "combination duvet" in the industry would be a good bet.
