What Great Gear Can You Get From Army Surplus Stores?

Extra shiny shoes for sale!

These shops don't exist on most high streets, they don't often appear in your local shopping centre and they don't tend to come round knocking on your door. Army surplus stores are a gold mine of great surplus army gear, including clothing, equipment and other useful stuff that sit in the spaces between high streets that only the wise venture into for awesome stuff.

So now that you know they exist, what exactly can you get in them?

Surplus Army Gear

The army is a very large institution which demands a great deal of clothing and equipment for fighting wars, policing stuff and camping. These army surplus stores are lucky enough to be in a position to buy excess stock either from the army directly, or from those who supply stock to the army. These items have a distinctly army feel of course and are normally of high quality in terms of durability and insulation, such is the nature of the life and work of the army and its soldiers.

In these stores you will find every kind of army clothing, from camouflage jackets and trousers to officers hats and badges and even shemaghs. There is always something useful you can find and even active soldiers are known to have bought extra kit from surplus stores if they lose or can't get something they need directly from the army.

Camping Gear

Army surplus stores are also an excellent place to go for cheap and hard wearing camping gear. You can easily find sleeping bags and tents for a range of sizes and weights that can be made really small to fit them into a backpack. You can also find more technical camping gear like spades, spare tent pegs, mallets, stoves and tins for cooking. Army camping gear is normally camouflage though so not great if you need a tent you can find in a field of other tents.

Services Gear

On top of all this army stuff, surplus stores tend to have equipment and clothing for use by the police, fire brigade and other services. These may include Goretex jackets and trousers or maybe even helmets, belts and badges. British Army surplus stuff and police stuff are often made by the same manufacturers as they all need to be hard wearing and uniform in nature.

Whatever you are looking for, there will always be something you can find that is useful either to wear or use somehow at your local army surplus store.
