Epoxy flooring is an ideal addition to any floor in any room, just about anywhere. From garages, kitchens, rumpus rooms and workplaces it's a fantastic fix up for cracked and damaged concrete. If you have an area that has a lot of heavy traffic walking through or machinery used, epoxy flooring is the best solution for you. Resistant to stains, chemicals, oils and cracks as well as the benefit of having non slip additives for areas with liquids used. Read on if you don't know, but want to know, what epoxy flooring is and how it's done.
What is epoxy flooring?
Epoxy flooring is made from polymer materials. It is turned into a solid form through chemical reaction and begins in liquid form. The epoxy flooring comes from two components, a hardener and a resin. A hard surface is created when these two components are added together. There is the option of having colored flakes added to the epoxy seamless flooring in tones of blues, greens, grays or browns. There are many more color combinations available to compliment your decor. If you work or live in an environment where extra safety against liquid spills is required, there is the option of non slip additives.
What to expect during application. -
When you choose epoxy flooring, it is generally a 3-4 day application:
Day 1: Depending on condition of concrete your floor may require a diamond grind to remove any contamination eg. paint, oil etc. After diamond grind, any cracks and holes will be repaired and primer coat applied.
Day 2: Another epoxy base coat to be applied over primer coat and flake color of your choice to be applied.
Day 3: Light sand to remove any excess flake. Floor is then vacuumed clean and first coat of UV non-yellowing polyurethane is applied.
Day 4: 2nd coat of UV non-yellowing polyurethane is applied and floor is completed.
Your new floor will be ready for "foot traffic" in 1-2 days, and after 5-6 days it will be ready for any vehicle or machinery traffic.
If you have a commercial situation with food preparation areas, it's likely you will need coving around the perimeter of walls to comply with council regulations. To make areas where food is prepared more hygienic there is a range of different radius covers to choose from. These remove corners between floors and walls.
Epoxy flooring is an extremely wise investment for your floors and is fast becoming popular in domestic settings as well as commercial. If you want hygienic floors that will last the test of time, you should definitely choose epoxy flooring.
