Types of Cut Pile Carpets

by Shams Arefin

There are many different types of rugs available. Cut pile carpets are made on a loom in much the same way as loop pile carpets. However, making these rugs takes one extra step. The loops that are made from weaving the carpet are then cut and allowed to tuft a little. This gives the carpet more of a thick and soft appearance. Most residential rugs are of this kind of carpets. The four main kinds of cut pile carpets are Saxony, textured, frieze, and cable. Each of these types of cut pile carpeting has a different look and style to them.

Textured rugs are twisted and steamed. These carpets usually have the appearance of being two-toned due to the vast modifications of the yarns. The benefits of textured cut pile rugs are that it doesn't show footprints and wears out much more slowly than the other styles of carpets. They also have an increased insulation.

The Saxony type of rugs is the kind of carpet that is soft and thick. The way these carpets are manufactured, each tuft has a recognizable appearance. Saxony rugs have a velvety look. There are some disadvantages to using Saxony cut pile rugs. It shows footprints and vacuum lines and tends to wear out faster than the other styles of cut pile rugs.

Cable style carpets are made of longer and thicker yarn than the other styles of cut pile rugs. This style of carpet looks incredibly beautiful and is extremely comfortable. There are a few disadvantages to cable type cut pile rugs. These include the fact that they can crush if they are put into an area with heavy foot traffic, and are thus recommended for areas with a light foot traffic such as bedrooms.

Frieze carpets are twisted exceptionally tightly and the yarn in the carpet curls over at its end. The finished product has a particularly elegant look to it as it has a textured, nubby appearance. The benefits of frieze style rugs are they don't display vacuum lines or footprints. The tight twisting of the yarn makes this type of carpet extremely durable.

These are the four main types of cut pile rugs. They differ in many ways such as the way in which they are manufactured, their appearance, as well as their durability. Cut pile carpets are thick and soft, and, therefore, are one of the most popular rugs for homes.
