Has Your Child's Pediatrician or Psychiatrist Been Truthful With Regards to ADHD Drugs?

by V K Rajagopalan

If you have a boy or girl who has just recently been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), you will no doubt have quite a few questions, over and above those which you may have discussed with your child's pediatrician or child psychiatrist?

A lot of parents of ADHD children are too ashamed to clarify their questions with friends and family, but you really do need to bear in mind that there is totally nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about. Millions upon millions of children have been diagnosed with ADHD, and the majority of them are leading completely normal lives.

As a parent of an ADHD kid, your greatest concern should be about the kind of ADHD treatment method being used to treat your child's disorder. As a general rule of thumb, and specifically in the United States, doctors will prescribe stimulant drugs. Doctors will also trade the normal pleasantries when they hand over such prescriptions. For example, they'll tell you to read the pamphlets that accompany a lot of drugs, and they'll tell you to check out for any behavioral alterations. It's those things which they don't tell you, that are really the major issue.

A number of families are shocked when they eventually find out that the drugs their children have been given are in fact in the same category/class as drugs like cocaine, opium, and heroin. They're in the same class because they are equally as addicting, and they too can have a disastrous influence on an individual's persona, regardless of whether that person is a child or an adult.

While I am of course not willing to point out particular names, I can nonetheless inform you that some of the most normally prescribed ADHD drugs are becoming progressively preferred on campuses nationwide. Hospitals have also revealed a sharp increase in the number of people overdosing on these drugs.

Probably the most disconcerting aspect of all is the fact that some of these ADHD drugs are known to increase the danger of suicide. Drug manufacturers don't need this kind of media attention, because in simple terms, it could easily destroy what can only be described as an extremely rewarding enterprise. However, many parents know only too well just how accurate this is, because regrettably they have already lost a family member to these drugs.

Some of these parents never desired their children to be treated in the first place, but were threatened and cajolled into agreeing. And, to add insult to injury, none of these parents have ever been given any type of settlement. Doctors say their hands are bound, in that they are needed to adhere to a given set of treatments; the drug vendors say they really aren't to blame because the drugs are FDA approved, and the FDA just say they are not responsible. So who is responsible?
