Time for Dollars - No More
An individual who asked us what we do was astonished when hearing how we actually live. What seemed to bother her was the absence of regular paychecks and not getting a regular rate. The idea of working frenetically for several years in order to have passive income to ultimately support us for the rest of our lives was lost on her. Ironically, this person's profession was real estate agent — another paid-by-the-deal career in which enormous financial returns are possible for the extremely motivated few who put in the effort.
Since working in an occupation that does not pay specifically according to time, we work more hours than ever — on our own terms. We usually don't celebrate holidays on the actual holiday. Rather, we covet that time to catch up on business with minimum distractions. Instead of being more frivolous with our time, we value it more than we ever thought we would. We love our time. It's very personal to us. Asking us to put a price on it would be like asking us to price our cats/dog: we can't. When you place more value on your time, you're more particular what you do with it, and reap bigger rewards from careful utilization of it. We don't waste time the way we used to. It's not up for grabs. Every decision we make is weighed in terms of what's potentially being displaced by our choice, and what is likely to be gained.
No matter how it would benefit many people in the long term to give up the hourly rate thing, that's not how it is in many people's hearts. When I hear, "I've got to get more hours" it's depressing! It's how most people live though. How about, "I've got to get more deals — what have you got?" Because one or more of those could support you for countless hours.
Sure, it's not regular, or normal by many individuals' standards. At least not all the time. But as a speaker recently put it, the last thing we want to be as investors is normal!
