by Scottie Yagi

While in the beginning of the growth and development of this little village located within the Borders, Moffat was listed as a very little Burgh by way of the systematization of Scotland of urban and countryside dwellings.

Throughout the 1700's Moffat had been a successful spa town, which attracted Holiday-makers from all over the nation. One of the most distinctive visitors to wander the streets of Moffat was the famous poet Rabbie Burns, who was a regular visitor to the Spa waters and the peace and quiet of this little flower of Scotland.

The town at this time has a human population close to 2,500 people living there. Having said that, combined with it's increasing tourist trade and frequent stop for tour bus companies Moffat has a large town feel together with the splendor and elegance of any rural hamlet.

Many tourist's who arrive in the town are desperate to have their photo taken outside the Famous Star Hotel. The reason behind this is it is officially the slimmest Hotel globally, standing at merely twenty feet in width. This saw Moffat put into the Official world Records Book. It is one of the reasons for Moffat's reputation across the world.

Any visitor to Moffat just has to pay a visit to 'The Devils Beef Tub' which was a favourite spot for Cattle thiefs to hide their animals. The key reason why it is deep is because of the fact its in the middle of 4 big hills.

As said before previously Moffats popularity grew rapidly on the uncovering of a pure spring outside of the Town. This resulted in the locals creating a very profitable Spa Town. The Victorians regarded the Spa as one of the best and most healthy in the Country. This resulted in Victorian tourist's flocking to the Township in droves. This led to the towns-folk constructing a very elegant Bath House right in the center of the Area. This bath house equaled many of the luxurious ones built all through the Roman period. It was designed in such a way that water was pumped in from the nearby spa spring. However, a huge fire saw Moffat gradually lose its recognition as a Spa Town.

The spring has been overhauled and now stands as a visitor attraction. So from 1921 (the time of the fire in an elegant spa hotel) Moffat simply had to try and find other means of income. With its natural beauty, both the town itself, and also surrounding landscapes and countryside was a magnet for holidaymakers. So Moffat without difficulty switched from a famous Spa Town into a Town famed simply because of its natural beauty and clean air.

Hill walkers frequently travel from throughout the globe to stay in the town and get the chance to investigate the beauty of its encompassing hills. They stay in the little town itelf and also the near by little town of Beattock. This is also target for visitors who have come for a walking holiday.

One of the most unique tourist spot's in the Town is definitely the statue of a Ram. This was built a long time ago by a local farmer and the story goes that after it was crafted someone shouted, "It's got nae lugs!" Interpreted this means, "It's got no ears!" When the statue was constructed the sculpter inadvertantly forgot to create some ears.

Another amazing feature of Moffat that you really must take a look at is the measurements of its main road. It's so wide that they have built a car park down the middle of it! Despite the presence of a car park in the middle there is still enough room to get a modest market on one side of the street.

No one knows just what the near future holds for this amazing little town. One thing is certain though. Moffat will still be regarded as the secret gem of Scotland. In fact many people are frightened to share with a lot of people about Moffat as they are terrified that it's going to lose its charm if people discover it's wonders. However, it has to be pointed out that this Author finds that an impossible concept.

If you get the opportunity pack your bags and head for the amazing and highly diversified little Town known as Moffat.

Something is for sure you're met with a warm welcome, both from the people working at your hotel and also people located in Moffat itself. The truth is once you get your feet underneath the table you may would like to make this vibrant and magnificent little Town a home from home.
