The Beatles Top Five Albums. The White Album Is #1
0
If you're a real Beatles freak like me then you'll want to own all of The Beatles albums but if you are a newcomer to the band you may want to start off with the best stuff and work your way down. And of course you may find you don't agree with my rankings along the way!

The Beatles Top Five Albums

#1 The White Album

The sprawling greatness of The White Album keeps it my favorite over the long haul. Sure it's got some songs that are "clunkers" by Beatles standards (like Ringo's "Don't Pass Me By") but it's also got lots of brilliant songs like "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" and "Blackbird." I love it because of all the chances it takes, all of the different sounds you can experience in one album. It's a one of a kind listening experience.

#2 Sgt. Pepper

In many ways Sgt. Pepper is the opposite of The White Album. It's amazing to think that they were released just one year apart. That's how fast The Beatles were moving back then. Sgt. Pepper is an album that flows but not in a "samey" way. All of the songs are drastically different from each other, but somehow they all fit together in the same carnival.

#3 Revolver

Perhaps The Beatles most consistently great album. The songs on this album are great. What it does lack in comparison to Sgt. Pepper is a grander feeling that the album is a whole piece. Revolver sounds more like a collection of songs in comparison. But it's a collection of very, very good songs!

#4 Abbey Road

I think you can actually make a reasonable argument that this is their best album. In some ways it's the album that sounds the most "modern," perhaps it's the fact that they recorded on a 16 track system instead of a 4 track system? That probably has a lot to do with it. But I think almost partly because of that, the album doesn't have quite the magic that the 3 above do. It's certainly great, but to my ears it's not quite as great as the three above.

#5 Magical Mystery Tour

Magical Mystery Tour is not a proper "album" as it was originally intended just as an EP but that doesn't stop it from being awesome. It's The Beatles at their most over the top "trippy." Their most overtly psychedelic. It includes some of their greatest songs like "I Am The Walrus" and "Strawberry Fields Forever."
