The Neverending Story of Your Reasons to Quit Smoking

by Harold Leipzig

Before asking my patients about their reasons, I, for one, do something different: I ask them to stop for a moment, to look inside and honestly tell me if they *really* want to quit smoking. This might sound like a rather awkward question to ask someone who has just come to a smoking cessation clinic, right? But believe me – I know my stuff. You might have noticed that the name of my motivational coaching mini-course is “Really Quit Smoking. com”. Well, there’s a reason to that!

Let me tell you something: not all people *really* want to quit smoking. And you might know what I mean by “really”. Do you have any idea how many of my patients come to the clinic just because they were pushed by their parents, spouse… and even by their mother-in-law?! Most of them! And, all the same, there are the cases of those who come because their girlfriend “talked them into it”, they suddenly became “convinced”, or, “they realized they had to give it up” after they read some leaflet in the subway, the other day. This is fake “momentum”. I can smell these patients a mile away. And they are the ones who won’t succeed – simply because they’re not so much interested in it.

Therefore, in this very moment I want you to go inside and ask yourself the same question – do you REALLY want to take this step? Listen to your heart, as they say. Be honest, don’t lie to yourself. Just stop for one moment from reading this article and think about it.

Alright, now think about NOT quitting smoking – jump into the future and visualize yourself and your life – how will it look like as a smoker? What influence will the fact that you kept smoking have on your health, on your image, on your relationships? Do you associate pain with those images? If yes, how much pain is there? Just leave aside this text, for one minute, and stick to yourself.

Well, now think of yourself as a non-smoker now. Go again into the future and visualize your life as a NON-SMOKER. Does it make a difference? Does it feel better? Do you associate pleasure with the images you’re seeing? Does it REALLY make a difference? Take a minute and think about it.

You must know that saying ‘Go with your gut’. If you have really paid attention to your intuition, you should know, by now, whether you want to give it up or not. If this is not a good time for you – maybe you’re tired or stressed – or, if you haven’t paid too much attention to the questions above, just keep this article handy, perhaps print it out – and do the assignment another time.

The idea though, is very simple – NO ONE is too weak to succeed. Take my word for it. As long as there is a strong desire, coming from WITHIN you, everything else becomes easy.

Now you can get back to thinking about your reasons to quit smoking.
