The World Powered Through Batteries

by Sophie Hopper

Batteries have been available for a longer time than we actually know. Archaeological digs revealed that as early as 1779, an ancient form of battery was invented which produced a steady and lasting electrical current. Today, batteries also come in a variety of forms, sizes, material compositions, and strengths.

Batteries can be disposable, meaning it can be used only once and thrown away after a period of time, or rechargeable, which may be recharged and used for several times. A battery has come about as miniature as a button like those of a watch, or as large as a room similar to those battery rooms of telecommunication companies.

The battery industry is amongst those that have generally benefitted from the surge of inventions. It is known that the worldwide battery industry generates nearly an annual sales of US$48 billion with about 6 percent growth each year. The figures may not be as recent but judging on the surge on the sales of battery-operated gadgets, one would surmise that the sales may be greater than we can ever imagine.

What's life with batteries? The button-size and finger size batteries have not just dramatically brought forth many inventions but have also made our lives more convenient and modern. The majority of the gadgets that we use and carry with us - cameras, mobile phones, and iPods - are battery-operated. As batteries entered into view, it has allowed us pretty much to enjoy tiny battery-operated gadgets anytime and anywhere we like. Furthermore, cordless battery-operated tools are usually hassle-free, providing greater leverage with regards to mobility and convenience when one's work necessitates a larger workroom.

The invention of batteries provided for a leeway for men and women in remote areas to experience a bit of a modern and technologically advanced life in areas where electricity is not provided. Batteries literally have come close as being a substitute to electricity. In some cases, there is no need to be connected to an electrical system for people to enjoy the basics in life, such as listening to the radio, getting oriented to time through a mother clock hanging by the wall, or having a source of light using battery-powered sources of light such as a torch or rechargeable flashlights.

Battery-powered gadgets are generally eco-friendly alternatives. Battery-operated equipments don't emit pollutants into the air as much as those operated by fuel or electricity. In line with the United States Environmental Protection Agency, electric-powered lawn-mowers give rise to almost 33 percent of the total pollution in the metropolis. On the other hand, a battery-powered lawn-mower's pollutant emission is generally less significant than its fuel-powered counterparts. Additionally, it won't cause noise pollution that much, as they quite simply hum while getting the job done.

Battery-powered gadgets do not add up to the energy consumption that most electrical powered tools around us do. Batteries possess a specific lifespan but their performance is mostly commensurate to their cost. Moreover, most battery-operated gadgets are specifically designed for a replaceable battery compartment. Should the battery fails, all that is required is to replace it with a brand new one.
