Habits for Success - Why You Should Start Your Own Business Today by Stephen Rawlings. This book is for anyone who has dreamed of starting their own business. Many people who have gone into business for themselves, have wondered why they did not go into business for themselves much sooner. It can be daunting to go out on your own and leave behind the security of a regular paycheck . Yet, across the country and around the world, people are going into business for themselves and succeeding like they never have before, and you could too.

In a recent report titled Work, Entrepreneurship and Opportunity in 21st Century America, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said, "Millions of Americans are embracing entrepreneurship by running their own small businesses, through independent contracting or direct selling." They want to be the master of their own destiny and want to have the freedom to choose their own hours. Even, if it means working longer and harder, in the initial start stages, with determination and persistence they are making it on their own terms. These brave Entrepreneurs are discovering that with the world wide web, e-mail, cheap teleconferencing and a new generation of Web tools it possible to run a fully functional and competitive business from a home on their laptop. They put in their time working on their business and still make it for their kids baseball , basket ball games, dance recitals and other important life events. As the saying goes, nobody gets rich working for other people. When you're in business for yourself, you write your own paycheck.

Going into business for yourself gives you the chance to set your own goals and to work on your hobby and passion. Gone are the days It used to be the case that you could stay in one job, and retire on your income with the collapse of the world economy many people are finding that their retirement income is not enough to live on. Also as the baby boomers are coming into retirement they want to give back to the planet, their community and to make a difference. A landmark study by MetLife Foundation and Civic Ventures found that 50 percent of Americans in their 50s and 60s want to do work "that matters.

So what does it take? First, let's look at what it doesn't take. The good news you don't need an MBA or high-powered business background. What it does require is expertise in something that you enjoy doing and won't see as work, such as consulting. You can get started on a shoestring budget and provided you are prepared to stay focused and persist until you get the results that you want and set realistic and achievable goals. Focused attention and commitment of time will be the other two essential ingredients of your success. Many of the greatest entrepreneurs began with no advanced learning or degrees and had little or no startup capital.

In Habits for Success the author Stephen Rawlings sets out some of the reasons why you should consider being an entrepreneur. Yes, you will be in charge, but as it points out it also means the risk is yours as the success of your enterprise depends on you. On the other hand, if you put in the hard work, do your homework and provide a service and a product that people want then you will get your financial reward. He talks about how you can set up your business to mitigate the risks of failing in business. Stephen, describes what opportunities are available for those of you feeling that you are not using all your talents and potential to the full. He lets you make up your mind up about whether a change and a new direction or challenge and a dive into entrepreneurship is for you.

Building a business from scratch requires the drive to be competitive on a constant basis. Like many other like minded people and successful men and women who have gone before you, when you finally see your finished product and the success it brings to you, you will feel completely amazed at the business you have created. This newfound excitement is incredibly invigorating for anybody who has been waiting for the perfect opportunity to step into the greater, larger part of who they are. As you explore your options and unleash the creative powers within you, you will begin to see opportunities for providing a service and a product to fill the gap in the market.

As Stephen points out make sure you have the physical and mental strength to keep working on your business. For once, all responsibilities and outcomes are on your shoulder, so do expect a lot of stressful and discouraging moments along the way. You will need to have the stamina to keep going, and keep pushing forward. As you take those all important action steps and complete tasks in the initial start up stage and then to take your business to the next level, as your business starts to generate revenue. Many people who have gone into business for themselves, have wondered why they did not go into business for themselves. This as Stephen Rawlings shares was his own experience too.

Excerpt: "Starting a business is a long-term goal many people have at the front of their to-do lists. The idea of not having to work for employers and having freedom to make decisions on your own has apparently become appealing. But any great business or company starts out at the bottom. And it is in these initial months that challenges are most prevalent and daunting. In fact, failure during this stage can come as swift as how the idea came to light. Surviving until the end is, however, possible with the right mindset, sufficient resources, and limitless willpower."
