How to Set Up a Business in Thailand

by Johnny Bender

Introduction
Thailand might be a place at first glance that people would not think would have a very large business class and while this is reasonably true at the same time it is misleading. The business class in Thailand is growing with each passing day and when you consider all of the internet based businesses that operate out of Thailand, it becomes easy to see why the business class is able to thrive in the country itself. Whether you are interested in setting up a physical business or an internet based business in the country of Thailand, there are a few things you need to be aware of. This article will walk you through the basic steps you need to set up a business in Thailand.
Tax Obligations
The first thing to keep in mind when you are dealing with any business is the tax obligations you have for that business. Your tax obligations will depend on the type of business you are running, the format you choose to run that business in and finally the tax code of the country in which you are running the business. Thailand's tax code will be different from the tax codes of any other country as each country has a tax code that has been shaped and molded by its own history. Find out what your tax obligations will be ahead of time in order to avoid any nasty surprises later on.
Product Laws
Depending on the product you are selling, there might be rules and regulations set down by the Thai government regarding those specific products. Products that involve gambling, sex, pornography and a number of other morally questionable acts will have laws in different countries governing their use so if you are interested in creating a business that sells a product in Thailand then you need to be aware of what the product laws for your specific industry are ahead of time.
Location
There are many locations you can choose for your business in the country of Thailand and the one that you decide on when all is said and done is ultimately going to be determined by where you feel it is most profitable. If your business is internet based, then you are better off staying in an urban area. It might be more expensive, but it also will have more reliable internet access which ultimately is what defines your business the most. If you are setting up a local retailer, then you should try and find a place where you don't have a lot of competition, but still a large potential customer base.
Conclusion
These are just three of a number of different things that you should be considering when you open your business in Thailand. The goal of this article was not just to inform you of these three, but also to get you thinking about other potential issues as well. The more angles you have covered before you start your business, the smoother the eventual launch will be.
