How Purines Effect Gout

by Allan Roberts

What are purines? If you are asking this question, then you are probably dealing with high uric acid and gout. Purines are parts of all human tissues. Purine is a substance in our bodies and is also found in foods. There are many foods high in purines. When you consume a lot of purines in your food, then high uric acid can develop. If your body isn't removing the uric acid, then crystals will form on your joints, and this will answer the number one question, what are the causes of gout?

The kidneys normally remove the uric acid, but if the kidneys are not removing the uric acid fast enough, then it builds up in the blood and forms uric acid crystals on the joints.

Gout is a form of arthritis. It is one of the most painful form of arthritis there is. To control the uric acid levels and the gout, then you need to watch the purines in food and avoid these foods. There are many foods that have high levels of purines in them. Changing your eating habits is the first thing you need to do to control the purines in your food.

Some of these foods that carry a high-level of purines in them are seafood. Scallops, mussels, sardines are just a few of these. Organ meats have purines in them too. Kidney, heart, liver and brains should be avoided. Some of your red meat will also carry high levels of purines in them as well.

All alcohol should be avoided. This doesn't mean you can never have a drink again. It just means that until you get your uric acid under control you need to watch everything you eat and drink to lower the uric acid levels in your blood.

Sweets can carry high levels of purines in them as well. Gravies and broth have high purines too. There are vegetables to avoid too. For example, asparagus, spinach, green peas, cauliflower and mushrooms. Until you get your gout under control avoid these foods and slowly try them later. They may not affect you, but until you can get the uric acid levels under control you should avoid all these foods.

Some foods affect different gout suffers than others. Some of these may not affect you as they may someone else. This will be a learning lesson for you. Gout does go away, but if you don't stick to the diet it will occur again and worse than before.
