Choosing New Flooring When Redecorating Can Be Confusing

You have looked around your home and took note that you have not made any updates in the past five or ten years. It's time for a change, but you do not know which way to go for carpet or wood flooring. That all depends on the new decorating style you choose and the time period you want to evoke.
Let's say you have taken a vacation to St. Bart's and you fell in love with the tropical look. If you were planning on re-doing your current floors, go for bamboo. It is not as expensive as hardwood and lasts just as long. This is true also if you are going in for a Japanese style of decorating. Most Japanese floors are bamboo. If you were planning to purchase new hardwood or carpeting you will discover that bamboo can be an affordable alternative.
If you like the sparse look of Swedish decorating floors can be either a wide plank or narrow plank light wood or they can be painted white. If you are planning to add hardwoods in your home or room select birch or white pine. Maybe you want your home to look like it belongs in the realm of royalty and want a Tudor style. Naturally, the floors would be wide plank dark wood. It was not unusual to see stone floor, especially in entryways and kitchens. There are plenty of less expensive faux stone and tile flooring on the market today.
A lot of people like the Southwestern look with its rich oranges and browns. More often than not, floors would be wide plank wood, terra cotta or hand-made tiles. However, while showing wear, they would never be boring. In a cottage style of decorating everything is supposed to look old and repurposed. Floors are really what you have. If you have old wood floors that have no hope of being refinished, you can replace them with older 'recycled' wood floors. Some people have bought wood flooring that was originally in a barn or older home. If you are going to re-carpet, just make sure you select "serviceable" neutral colors than do not look too posh.
Maybe your last trip was to the Yucatan which really is a melting pot of many cultures that invaded the territory or called it home for hundreds of years. Remember Mexico is very hot and the people use everything possible to keep the cool in and the hot out. This is why you will find so many tile floors. Tile is very cool on bare feet. Wood was not prevalent because most people could not afford - or never heard of - termite control.
When you decide on how you want to re-decorate your home choose a really good flooring store that sells everything from hardwoods to carpet to tile and laminate flooring. Explain to your salesperson the look you are trying to achieve and he or she will point you in the right direction. Be sure to tell them your budget so they can find just the right flooring that is budget-friendly.
