Auto Insurance Claims - What You Should Do If You're In An Accident

by Ryan Richardson

Being involved in a car accident can certainly be a stressful event even if it's a relatively fender bender. If you've never filed auto insurance claims before this can add even more anxiety to an already stressful situation. Knowing what to expect ahead of time will help ease the fear and anxiety if you should ever need to make a claim so this article is going to tell you what to expect and give you some tips to get through the process more easily.

One of the first things you should do if you are involved in a collision is to see if everyone's okay and if someone is hurt, call 911 immediately. If the accident is not serious and no one is injured you should make note of the date, time and location of the accident and you will also need to exchange insurance information and also get their license plate number, driver's license number, their name, address, and phone number, and you also want to make note of the make and model of their vehicle.

If you happen to have a camera with you it would be a good idea to take photos of the accident from several different angles. If you are not at fault you want to have as much proof as possible that the other driver was at fault so that their insurance company will pay for the damages.

If there are any witnesses ask them if they would be willing to give you their contact information so that they can provide their testimony as to who they believe was at fault for the accident.

If you are going to file a claim with your auto insurance provider you'll want to do so as quickly as possible. If you wait too long you may not be able to file a claim and then your insurance company would not help you. Some insurance providers only have a brief time limit in which you are allowed to file a claim after an accident occurs.

After you've collected as much information as possible from the other driver and about the accident itself you would call your insurance company and they would walk you through the rest of the process sending you any paperwork that you would need to fill out. Your insurance agent or customer service representative for your insurance company will generally be very helpful and be able to answer any questions that you have. Making auto insurance claims, while not pleasant, does not have to be a difficult and stressful process.
