When picking out a pet, we seldom consider the effort involved in crate training a dog to get them effectively house trained. Getting a pet is really more of an emotional decision than rational though.

It may have been the idea of playing catch and teaching a dog new tricks that had you excited. While crate training wasn't the most important consideration in making this decision, you probably were thinking more of all the positives a pet can offer. Remember those reasons because unless you plan on being outside all the time, it's natural to want your pet to come inside with you.

One of the first things an owner needs to do when getting a new puppy is to consider crate training a dog. That is, if they want to have their pet be an actual companion and enjoy the comfort of having a good friend spend time with them in the house. Some people think that simply by confining your pet, you are being somehow heartless and callous.

Kenneling is not the same as putting them in a cage for storage and neither is considered crate training. Make no mistake, many of these same people who complain about how terrible it is to use a cage for confinement are the same folks that will be begging for help with their puppies bad habits when he's a few months older.

Problems develop as an animal grows up and bad habits are left. The result is that your pup picks up behaviors and habits that make effective crate training very difficult. Those troublesome behaviors are to put it bluntly, is when your dog has used your home as their personal bathroom. Control of your dog while in the house is key to breaking bad habits and establishing new ones.

Dogs typically can pick out a place to go and start peeing in only a few seconds, so it's important that you are attentive and all times when your pet is out of his crate. It's absolutely critical that you stay attentive until you have broken any bad behaviors crated before you started house training. Depending on the effort you give to break those habits and create new behaviors will determine the amount of time required for success. Once your dog knows what you want him to do, and where you want him to do it bathroom breaks become a simple matter of opening the back door to letting them out.

Crate training a dog is accomplished, especially with an adult dog, by making it clear who's the alpha dog or boss of the pack. Dogs view their family as a pack and control belongs to the alpha dog or leader. That leader always needs to be clear to your pet and always needs to be you.

Although some dogs may seem to have an obstinate personality and can be difficult, this is yet another opportunity for you to keep control. A headstrong dog will soon associate that being good and having your approval equals freedom and being near you. This is a big benefit of confinement and the use of housebreaking methods to establish who is the alpha dog or leader of the pack.

Crate training a dog is a very important time in owning a puppy as it determines the difference between a life with a fantastic companion or a time of constant frustrations and anger toward your best friend. Take the time necessary to learn how to effectively complete housebreaking so your puppy can enjoy a life of being close with you no matter where your travels my lead.

The time of teaching and training your puppy should be fun for both you and him. Take the time to learn the right way and you will be rewarded with a wonderful and reliable companion for a lifetime.
