Paint Spraying Using Air Guns

by Casey Trillbar

If you take a look around you chances are you can point out about a dozen things that have been painted, stained, and finished. Paints and stains are used to enhance the beauty of a finished product by giving it color. Finishes like lacquer are applied over a painted or stained product to give it a beautiful shine as well as protect the finish beneath it. A majority of the paints, stains, and finishes you see around you were accomplished by using paint spraying equipment and more specifically air guns.

Air guns are the most commonly used paint sprayer equipment. Air guns provide amateur and professional painters the ability to get a smooth even coat of paint that is clean and accentuates the product it is being applied to. Air guns for paint spraying are also used in many manufacturing plants to give products the same smooth, clean paint results. In many cases, air guns used in manufacturing are automated to help speed up the assembly process as well as get perfect results every time.

There are typically three components to an air gun. They are the nozzle, basin, and air compressor. The nozzles on air guns used for paint sprayer play an important role in the paint spraying process. The nozzles are what are used to get the right consistency and the right pattern to properly coat the product being painted. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes to help achieve the right consistency and pattern. The three most commonly used nozzles on air guns are the full cone, hollow cone, and flat stream. The basin on an air gun for paint spraying is where the paint is stored for use.

This basin is air tight so that when air from a compressor is applied to it, it pressurizes the basin and forces the paint through the nozzle when the trigger is depressed. The size of the basin will depend on the type of air gun. Some basins are smaller for small jobs as is the case with air brushes that are typically used for small detail work. Larger air guns use larger basins so that they can cover larger areas.

Air compressors as mentioned earlier are used to pressurize the basin so that paint is forced out of the air gun nozzle. Air compressors come in a variety of sizes depending on the type of paint application. Some compressors can be rather large and mounted on carts to make them mobile. Other compressors can be small and portable and are mounted directly to the air gun for ease of use. Smaller air guns such as the case with air brushes will use small cans of compressed air.

Air guns continue to be the paint spraying equipment of choice for many painters and manufacturers. They offer the opportunity to provide the cleanest, smoothest finish. Today, portable hand-held air gun units are available so that anybody no matter their skill level can use an air gun to get the paint results they want.
