Why The Web Based Dental Software?

by Andy Jensen

Because checking production numbers and X-rays from Starbucks is kind of exhilarating. Do you remember that first call with a cell phone? With my first phone I was charged for every minute I used on the phone, so I didn't use the phone until several days after I bought it. I remember that well: I was on the freeway and I needed to get a message to my wife quickly. So I took out my new phone, turned it on, and made my first call. And what a cool thing that was! Driving down the freeway and talking to my wife. Pretty neat stuff and I had a grin on my face from ear to ear.

Today, I call my wife from the freeway everyday on the way home. And my phone is always on. If I don't call my wife she thinks I'm lying on the side of the road in an accident.

With web-based dental software all you need to access all of your patient data is a computer with Internet access. If you're sipping that cinnamon dolce latte at Starbucks you can also check production numbers, review the day's schedule and maybe examine an x-ray or two. And the first time, second time, and even the third time you do that you'll have a smile on your face from ear to ear.

Convenience and flexibility are just two of many reasons why the web makes more sense. Actually there are seven or eight reasons why the web makes a bunch more sense for dental software. But two for now is just fine. I know doctors who are able to access their dental software from home with their old-fashioned, client-server software. Here's the steps they went through to get there:

First, they had to identify which remote access software would work best.

Second, they purchased the software (or downloaded unproven, unreliable, or unsupported freeware).

Third, they installed the software.

Fourth, they called their IT pro because they're a dentist, not a computer whiz. Remote software usually requires some tinkering.

Fifth, they're frustrated because the access speed is not satisfactory. Which brings me to Staff Training.

Turnover in staff is a part of life. People are coming and going all the time due to a number of different reasons. Some of those reasons you may be able to control (if you're nice and pay fairly you may keep staff around much longer than if you're a grouch and you expect people to work only for the opportunity to bask in your awesomeness).

But I digress...

New team members need to learn how to use your dental software. If you've moved your practice to the cloud, smart move!
