Yucatan Facts A To F

by Robert Nickel

The Yucatan Peninsula is world famous for its natural beauty and draw for visitors from all over the world. The peninsular is divided into three states; on the east is Quintana Roo, where the Riviera Maya and Cancun are located. The western portion of the peninsula is home to the state of Campeche, and the state of Yucatan takes up a pie-shaped portion encompassing the top portion and stretching down towards the center of the peninsula. Despite the state designations, the entire peninsula often referred to as simply 'the Yucatan'.

This is a compilation of recommendations and tips for new arrivals to the Yucatan, no matter which state you happen to land in. In this instance 'a' is for the archaeological region reaching down the middle of the peninsula, and 'a' is the best place to start. All of the major Maya ruins are that area, including Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Ek' Balam just as a start. Make a point of visiting these ruins, for they are a vivid reminder of the roots of all civilisations.

'B' is for birdwatching, and what a place for the amateur ornithologist! Unfortunately, of all of the hundreds of species of birds local to the Yucatan, almost all are endangered. Many bird fanciers find the Mexican jungle a dream come true, and for them it is a wonderful sight to see even a small number of them in the wild.

'C' is for cenote. Unique geological features have been created in the area, by the massive deposits of limestone upon which the Yucatan sits. As underground rivers wear away the limestone, sinkholes develop. Over hundreds of years an entire ecosystem begins to develop within those underground sinkholes. A cenote is formed when the roof of a sinkhole becomes visible in the earth's surface. All along the shores of the peninsula, and inland as well, cenotes can be found. Spelunkers and adventurers can have an experience of a lifetime exploring the cenotes of the Yucatan

Those coastal cenotes bring us to our 'd' of this series: diving. The world's best divers are known to favor the waters around the Yucatan as a top dive spot. The cenotes provide challenges like nowhere else in the world, and the marine life is truly exotic.

'E' is for Eco-resorts. With such a world-focus on conservation and protection of the environment, eco-resorts have begun popping up all over the Yucatan. Their mission is to promote tourism to Cancun and the region, and educate the public on their delicate eco-systems.
