Throwing a party can be even more fun if you use these 5 tips for economical party supplies. First shop smart. Don't buy the first thing you see, look around and compare prices. If you know you will probably be entertaining in the next several months even if you don't have a specific party in mind, then shop for the party supplies in advance. As you are shopping for party supplies, be on guard for clearance sales and close out merchandise. When you see a good deal snap it up, but remember to get enough because chances are you won't be able to go back in a few weeks and get more of the same item.

Tip number two of the 5 tips for economical party supplies is to think discount store and dollar store. You can get great inexpensive party supplies at dollar and discount stores. Prior to making any commitment regarding party supplies, a smart hostess should visit a variety of retail shops and be very creative. Dangles that can be used for a variety of decorations can be made from curly ribbon. Could an inexpensive discount store gift bag filled with equally inexpensive silk flowers make a cute centerpiece? What about using clear plastic cups from the dollar store tied with a pretty ribbon and filled with candy or hair bows, ribbons and scrunchies, as party favors.

Tip number three of the 5 tips for economical party supplies is to purchase holiday party supplies when they go on sale after the holiday. Think creatively for this one. For example, buy red and green plates, cups and napkins after Christmas. Then use the red at Valentine's Day and the Fourth of July. Save the green for St. Patrick's Day, the first day of Spring or Arbor Day. Easter party supplies in pastel colors with floral designs will be discounted after Easter. Furthermore, an assortment of party supplies can be used for a variety of parties and special events (Mother's Day, Baby and Bridal Showers).

The fourth of the 5 tips for economical party supplies is to think plain colors. Even if they are not on sale, plates, cups and napkins in plain colors are often less expensive than those with designs. For the most part, color coordinating and mixing your party supplies will have to the occasion. For example, plain blue plates can be mixed with plain green cups and plain yellow napkins for a birthday party. The same blue plates could be mixed with white cups and silver napkins for an anniversary party.

Tip number five of the 5 tips for economical party supplies is to use homemade party supplies whenever possible. Make homemade invitations using computer printouts glued to lightweight cardstock with the party information written on the back using a gel pen. Make homemade banners using butcher's paper and streamers. Cut sheets of scrapbook paper making several place cards from each sheet.
