What makes a t-shirt iconic? It certainly isn't the stitching or the type of collar that's for sure. And really the colour doesn't have anything to do with it either. The main thing about a t-shirt that makes it iconic is the image on it. <br/><br/> What does it matter if it's on a t-shirt then, I hear you say? Well the point of a t-shirt is that someone is wearing it and that this shows that they endorse the message conveyed on the garment. A logo on a wall or on a poster does not carry the same human weight. Here are some super iconic t-shirts… <br/><br/> I Love New York <br/><br/> An iconic t-shirt is one that was very popular and is instantly recognisable. A great example of this is the classic 'I ♥ N Y' in typeface font, with a red heart symbol on a white t-shirt. This logo will instantly remind people of the Big Apple and all the films, history and buzz that surrounds it. The t-shirt crops up in countless pieces of pop culture including things like 'Friends'. <br/><br/> Che Guevara <br/><br/> Che Guevara was a Marxist revolutionary in the 60's. His image is hugely popular around the world as a figure of inspirational rebellion and also as an image of alternative fashion. The picture of his face wearing his trademark beret is seen all around the world and in particular, on t-shirts. <br/><br/> Misfits <br/><br/> The Misfits are a 'horror punk' rock band from the USA. The logo of a smiling skull face is one of the most enduring punk rock images to ever have been put on a t-shirt. Originally the design on their single, 'Horror Business', but has since appeared in all kinds of band merchandise, including countless t-shirts. <br/><br/> Have a Nice Day <br/><br/> Another super iconic t-shirt is the big yellow 'smiley' happy face image. This was created back in 1963 by Harvey Ball as part of an advertising job for a life insurance company in Massachusetts. They wanted an image to put on pins and other materials like funny t shirts that would encourage their staff to smile more while working and to improve moral. It worked, and the image became very popular. It is now synonymous with the line 'have a nice day' which was created by someone else at a later date and adorns many a slogan t shirt. <br/><br/> There is no real formula for an iconic t-shirt. It helps for the image to be of an iconic person, or of an iconic photograph, but often it is just circumstantial. <br/><br/> <br/><br/>
