The History Of The BBQ

by Jackson Clarke

Come rain, or often sunshine in the UK; there is nothing more enticing, exciting and smile inducing than a Barbeque or BBQ, however you wish to spell it! Lighting up the coal, turning on the gas, getting the family all together and making some fantastic food is the pinnacle of summer and can be one of the highlights of the year but just how much do we know about the barbeque and its origins?

It would be rather just to state that, love and appreciation aside, not many of us are fully aware of the BBQ with one half arguing its origins to have stemmed from Australia whilst the other half fight the American argument but just where did the Barbeque come from?

In all actuality; determining the origins of the BBQ all depends on what our definition of a barbeque is? If we think of it as a process of cooking meat on a fire then it very much stems back to the early days of Neanderthals does it not? However if we look to today and meat being cooked on such contraptions as the Weber one touch bbq then the origins become a little clearer.

The term barbeque is reported to have stemmed from the word 'barbacoa'; a process of cooking invented by the natives of the West Indies which soon evolved following the migration of a large proportion of the South African population, to the United States of America. The method of cooking would often involve a smoke pit or a raised wooden rack in which would be placed and slowly cooked; a massive difference to today's fast cooking machines like the Weber spirit e210!

Like all created traditions, the method of cooking was altered to cater for the audience and the time and thus 'barbacoa' underwent some rather natural changes depending on the location and the people the cooking style was adopted by.

Many argue against the origins of the barbeque and slow pit cooking as naturally; such outdoor methods of gently cooking meat have been around for thousands and thousands of years however when it comes to rack cooking; this is where 'barbacoa' and where many believe that the barbeque originated from.

Times have dictated a natural change, as they do with all man made products and services and the barbeque is no different to this. Openly embraced by people across the world, some more than others; the barbeque is now a staple food and considered the ultimate tool in a family meal or a party and todays abundance of Barbeque accessories available online; including the ever popular and fantastic working weber bbq accessories; this is one tradition that is growing faster than ever.

Whatever you may believe about the barbeque and its origins; there is no doubt that this is one fantastic tradition that is evolving at a phenomenal pace!

Have you embraced the barbeque and taken out your grill this summer? Forget the British weather and get the family around to celebrate one of the oldest and by far the greatest ways of cooking!
