Tips On Baiting Termites

by Chuck Stewart

Each year, these bugs cause millions of dollars in damages to homes in the US, but major damages to your own home can be avoided through the proper use of annual inspections. If a professional is brought into your home each year to check for these pests, he will be able to nip any new colonies in the bud and recommend methods for their extermination. Making use of termite bait to destroy a colony in your home can be very effective. Of all the termite and pest control methods meant to keep your home safe from these pests, baiting is often used by professionals to destroy these troublesome pests.

Baiting is only one method used to rid a property of termites, but it is used often because it can be very effective in destroying a colony even if the exact location of that colony is never found. It can be used as a sort of last resort, but this does not mean that it does not work well. Many homeowners do not understand how a colony thrives and what it takes to get rid of one, and many simply spray poison chemicals throughout the property in hopes that this will eliminate the problem. However, if these pests are not destroyed where they live in the colony, they will simply continue to reproduce, and to feed upon your home.

To work, containers full of poisoned bait are placed in the ground to lure them in. They feed upon the slow-acting poisoned substances, and bring them back to the nest to feed those members of the colony who never leave. In this way, all members of the colony are poisoned and the colony cannot continue to reproduce. Any eggs that hatch after other members of the colony have been poisoned will not survive long without any workers left to bring them food. Because baiting may take some time to kill off a colony completely, other methods are best used if the colony has grown to a size which requires more immediate actions. This is one of the reasons why it is best to call in a professional, who can determine whether the problem is of sufficient size to require drastic measures.

Baits generally consist of the kind of glucose-heavy substances which termites normally consume, such as paper, cardboard or wood shavings. These are then treated with a slow-acting poison which will eventually work to destroy the colony. The bait is meant to attract the attentions of termites, because if it fails to do so it will not be effective at all.

These baiting containers are usually placed underground, where termites like to build their colonies. They typically cannot see or smell these containers, but happen upon them as they make their way toward your home to feed. The containers can be placed above the ground as well as indoors depending upon where they are more likely to make an impact. Remember, termites are not an issue which can be ignored. If you decide not to call in a professional, you do so at the risk of your own home.
