How To Brighten Up Your Top Floor Flat

High rise high life…

by Sam Qam

The way the UK was put together and thanks to our increasingly densely populated cities, the number of people living in top floor flats is at an all-time high. While they do offer great views and an increase in security, they are a bit of a slog to get to if there is no lift and limit the options available to keen gardeners.

If you still want to feed your gardening habit and want to get as much organic life into your top floor flat as possible, you do have a number of options:

Indoor Greenhouse

If you are keen on your home grown fruit and vegetables one thing you can do is to get an indoor greenhouse. These look exactly like regular greenhouses except are made out of lightweight plastic. You can easily find a kit online or at your local garden centre complete with installation instructions. You can use it to move your crop from an allotment or old garden or start a fresh in your spare room. Pay attention to heating, light and humidity though.

Window Boxes

If you have a particularly sunny set of window ledges in your high rise home, why not make the most of your window boxes. Either clean out any pots or boxes that you have in place already or buy some new ones and make sure they can be secured in place just in case of heavy rain or high winds. Plant them with colourful light loving flowers or herbs in early spring and you should have a nice display by the time summer comes around.

Hydroponics

If you want to grow something particularly exotic you may need to set up a hydroponics system in your flat. This is a method of growing which involves special mineral solutions and water but no soil. Instead they can be set in things like gravel or coconut husks to give them something to bind to. The system is highly controllable and as a result is often more efficient. Plus it can be set up indoors.

The only downside though is that some people may think that you are trying to grow some kind of cannabis seed like White Widow seeds as hydroponics is a common method for growing these plants illegally.

Cactus

One final option is to get yourself a set of cactuses. These prickly fellows look great all year round and are incredibly hard wearing, but may not be challenging enough an option for a keen gardener.
