Surge in Commercial Waste Disposal Costs
Rises in Landfill Tax could potentially recover billions of pounds, according research by the Green Alliance.
What Does The Surge In Commercial Waste Disposal Mean?
In the 2013 budget, the chancellor of the exchequer announced a rise of £8 in Landfill Tax. Confirmed to reach £80 per tonne by 2014/15, the cost of commercial waste disposal has rocketed. In new research by the Green Alliance, it was found that food, textiles, wood and plastics could potentially be worth an estimated £2.5 billion in resources if they were kept in production each year. Championing the landfill ban, the Green Alliance research shows that reusing and recycling valuable materials would encourage better collections systems in the UK and avoid the one billion pounds in landfill tax altogether. The research goes on to suggest that:
• £229 million wood • £1,083 million of plastics • £646 millions of textiles and • £693 million of food
could be recovered if a landfill ban was to be implemented.
The Green Alliance suggests that raw materials should be valuable enough to keep them out of landfill altogether. If the easy option is removed, more waste disposal contractors would be encouraged to improve collection systems, in turn bringing down the cost of recycling. In 2003, the UK spent £88 million on the land fill and collection of illegally dumped cars alone. A policy introduced later that year prohibited the dumping and land filling of cars through End of Life Vehicle (ELV), reportedly reaping £29 million in recovered resources. In addition to these savings, the Green Alliance research indicated that commercial waste disposal diversion could also avoid £1 billion in land fill costs.
Improving Your Waste Management Disposal Plan
The knock on effects of poor waste management disposal will not only affect the amount of waste sent to landfill, but will greatly reduced the amount of raw materials available to us. The rising costs of raw materials are one of the key factors affecting the construction and manufacturing industries. Initiative set out by the Green Alliance and EU bodies aim to remove landfill as the default option for commercial waste disposal. By gradually banning valuable raw materials from landfill, recycling infrastructures will greatly improve and costs will be regained.
