PSP Firmware 3.00-The One We've Waited For?

PSP to PS3 Compatibility Now A Reality

by Charles Smith

Sony have just released the most impressive firmware yet for the PSP, and it seems to have a lot in common with the PS3. Up to now many people avoided the various updates but this one has been a lot more popular, and we’re going to show you why.

Version 3.0 firmware for the PSP or Playstation portable from Sony has finally made the emulation of PSone games possible. You can download the games from the Sony Playstation online stores, and then save them to your memory stick to play whenever you want to. Pretty cool. My money’s on Driver being the best selling title-any takers?

Another huge development is that if you have a PS3, the firmware update makes it possible for your PSP to control and interact with your PS3 from a remote location. How high tech is that?

It’s not quite clear what the main idea is behind operating the PS3 via the PSP, but it is generally assumed that you will be able to surf the web by hooking into your PS3s web capabilities and things like that, as well as transfer PSP games to the PS3. Very cool.

I’m pretty excited about the PSone games being made available for PSP. A few early releases titles have been mentioned but nothing is confirmed, although it is believed that the original resident evil is going to be made available, which is of course excellent news.

Another major development is that firmware 3.00 makes it so that if you switch the PSP on with a UMD game inside, it will automatically boot up the game without you having to go through menus etc. This is a great touch, and proves that Sony are listening to their customers.

It’s really cool to see a company release a piece of hardware and then stand behind it all the way, offering support and upgrades as well as lots of new accessories for it etc. It’s great to see that, and I wish more big companies would follow suit.

Another upgrade of note is that you will now be able to Fast Forward and Rewind Music and Videos at 3 different speeds, which is good stuff, it brings that aspect of the PSP a little bit up to date.

I don’t know about you, but I am constantly surprised by Sony’s support of their PSP, and it’s something that makes me feel a whole lot better about owning one!
