Five Crucial Tips for Booking Cottages in South Devon

by Derryck Strachan

Whether you're planning a much needed romantic break away or a fun-packed family holiday, South Devon can certainly give other top UK destinations a run for their money, and usually for a fair bit less money at that. If you're looking to squeeze even more out of your South Devon holiday, take a look at our five top tips before booking your cottage.

1. Location, location, location!

Everyone has their own unique idea about what makes a perfect holiday for them. Some people want the beach on their doorstep, while others would prefer their cottage to be within staggering distance of the pubs and restaurants. If you just want to get away from the stress and strain of everyday life then the ideal break would be one full of the peace and quiet of the countryside, preferably as far away as possible from the first two groups of people. Fortunately South Devon has plenty of cottages to keep every type of holidaymaker happy. If you spend a little time looking you can find the one that is specifically suited to you, whether that's close to the centre of the action in Torquay, or tucked away on the remote edge of the Dartmoor.

2. Consider booking out of season

One of South Devon's many selling points is that the weather is generally just that little bit nicer than most other places in the UK, particularly on the English Riviera which benefits from its own micro-climate thanks to its position within a sheltered bay. You can take advantage of this often unseasonably warm climate by booking your holiday outside the main tourist seasons. Not only will it be cheaper, but the queues at attractions will smaller too. And it's easier to get a great table at that exclusive restaurant too…

3. Look for something special

There are hundreds of cottages in South Devon to choose from, ranging from cosy little cottages that are perfect for romantic couples, to expansive abodes for big families. Every cottage in south Devon is different and has its own unique character, and you'll also find cottages that have a little extra to offer. Discover cottages perched high above the coast with amazing sea views, or indulge in the luxury of your very own swimming pool. Many cottages are listed buildings with their own rich history. Your holiday is a special occasion, so it's worth finding a cottage that's special too.

4. Book early to avoid disappointment

Of course this is good general advice for any holiday, but it's worth bearing in mind that South Devon is an incredibly popular destination for UK and overseas holidaymakers. With several million visitors each year you may be up against some stiff competition for your first choice accommodation. So it's a good idea to take the initiative well in advance.

5. Love dogs? Bring them along

If he's really your best friend then you won't leave him behind when you go on holiday. A high proportion of cottages in South Devon are dog-friendly, as are many attractions and establishments. Your pet deserves a bit of a holiday too, and there are plenty of picturesque routes that could have been purpose-built for walkies, through moors, up hills and even along some beaches.
