A Monthly Visit From California Wineries

by Jack Terry

When we shop for most food and drinks, it is pretty easy for us to make a decision. We probably pick some items because it is the same one we grew up using. We put a few others in our cart because we think it tastes better than the competition, and of course, some things come home with us because we have a coupon for them. Even when it comes to things like beer and liquor, people tend to demonstrate a brand loyalty, but there is something else that cannot apply to wine: the number of choices. If you are a whiskey drinker, once you have narrowed it down to your particular style - say, blended Canadian whiskey over single malt Scotch whiskey - there are only a handful of choices to select from. Furthermore, if the one you like is not there, you can be reasonably comfortable with a second or even third choice, knowing that it will taste pretty much the same. Try doing that in the wine aisle. Simply put, there are no two wines that are the same.

A typically sized wine store will usually stock several dozen different bottles of popular varietals, such as Merlot and Chardonnay. Even lesser known varietals will have several bottles to choose from. Each one is going to be different based on where it was grown, when it was harvested and how long it was aged, among other factors. Trying to decide which is going to be your best choice is going to be difficult, especially if you have promised yourself that you were going to try something new. The best way to handle this situation is to avoid the wine store altogether and do your wine shopping at home with the help of an expert.

Wine of the month clubs are exactly what the name sounds like. Every month, a different bottle or bottles of wine will show up at your door. The only decision that you have to make is figuring out how much you want to spend. Many wines clubs offer a variety of membership levels, so everyone from first time wine drinkers to seasoned oenophiles can get what they are looking for. That is when the magic really begins. Wine of the month clubs do not just go to the local store, buy a case of bottles off the shelves, and ship them to their customers. They work with small batch vineyards, many of which do not sell their wine anywhere else outside their own tasting room, to ensure that their members are not only getting exceptional award-winning wines, they are also getting something truly unique. By joining a wine club and leaving the decision making to the experts, you are guaranteeing that no matter how the rest of your shopping goes that month, at least you will have a great bottle of wine.
