Organizing Your Home: The Garage/Shed
When it comes to organizing your home, you have to know where to begin. Taking the house room by room is usually the best way to do it, but sometimes you forget one of the most important areas of the house that isn't actually a part of it: your garage or shed. Whether you have an indoor garage or just a tool shed, you need to keep it organized or you won't find what you need in an emergency.
The first thing you should do is get some indoor lighting for your garage. Not only is it going to make it that much more easily accessible, it's going to help you organize if you can see better. Many garages have an overhead light but they are often not strong enough. Getting an extra light or lamp for the space may be a good idea, especially if you plan to do more than just store cars in it.
Garages are often where tools are kept, especially woodworking and gardening tools. There are plenty of organizing products you can use. For smaller items like hammers, gardening shears and the like, you can get a caddy top hang on the wall that will hold them all. You can also hang up hooks that will allow you to hand the tools between them or on them with their handle. You should give yourself some sort of surface space if you plan to do any work inside the garage. Here you can keep caddies to hold items like nails and other small objects that may be easily lost.
Shelving is important for all your other items. Car fluid, gardening fertilizers and chemicals, and any other bottles should be stored together and in a way that marks them off as more hazardous materials. Keep them on a high shelf so they are out of reach from children.
When it comes to organizing your home in regards to bigger items, there's a few way to do this. If you store ladders in your shed or garage, the safest way to do so is by hanging it on hooks or by settling it on the floor horizontally. Letting it lean vertically on a wall can make it a hazard as it's very easy to knock over. Keep lawn mowers and other large items in their own corner, and always in a safe, off position.
Don't be afraid when organizing your home to also do a bit of other decorating. A garage is allowed to look pretty so add some color to the walls or shelving if you can. If it's a welcoming environment, you may find you'll be encouraged to do more household repair work in there.
