Sara Bareilles' 'Love Song' is a New Pop Classic
Bareilles' Pop Hit is Takes the Summer by Storm
During June, July, and August of 2007, Sara Bareilles dominated the radio waves with her catchy hit "Love Song." Radio channels were playing it nonstop, web purchases were flying off the cyber-shelves, it was featured as an iTunes song of the day, it became a featured song of the day for Starbucks. It was featured in a television commercial. Sara played it on the Late Late Show among several other shows. It seemed as if everyone on the planet was singing out, "I'm not gonna write you a love song 'cause you asked for it 'cause you need one, you see."
So, where did this this bouncy tune originate from? A bad relationship, a terrible heartbreak?
No, the explanation is actually quite a bit more funny than that.
Believe it or not, the lyric is actually written at her record label! She wrote the lyric to explain her unhappiness with them for pushing her to focus on more typically mainstream pop material. It's actually the same old set-up, truly. A company brings an artist on board because they posess that "je ne sais quoi" that sets them apart from everyone else, and then begins to push them to conform - to change to become like everyone else.
I seriously doubt they're upset with Sara now, however. The musical conflict that she documented in "Love Song" has brought them a good amount of song purchases, and through that a good amount of money. If other singers could make them that amount of money criticizing them, I'm pretty sure they would not have a problem with it.
Truthfully, they would possibly even engender conflict merely to instigate it!
As it stands however, Sara B stays the only songwriter on the summer charts to have a hit that�s about conflict, not with a lover or an ex-lover, but with a giant company.
And I think that's a distinction that's probably going to stay.
