You can initiate this pattern by starting with the first finger on the A string’s sixth fret. Then second finger and fourth finger on A string; followed by fingers one, two and four on D string; and then the first, third and fourth fingers on G string. By performing the above-mentioned action you would play E flat, F, G, A flat, C, D, and finish with E flat. This is also known as E flat major guitar scale. If you follow the same E flat major pattern anywhere on the A or E strings by placing the second finger on the second fret of the E string then you will produce F sharp major guitar scale.
Closed position can also be employed for playing minor scales and it can be initiated on any string. This way you can master playing guitar scales. You will be surprised to know that there are over 120 scales in western music, where both the major guitar scale and the minor guitar scales are employed. However, you should remember that most of the commonly used guitars have only three octave range. As a final tip, always begin your guitar training by playing closed positions, which will make your learning a lot easier.
