Decrease Your Tasks and Increase Your Life

by Thomas Carroll

"It is not daily increase, it's daily decrease." - Bruce Lee

There are so many nagging things at the back of our minds. Things that we want to do, things that we should do and things that we don't need to do, but for some reason or other we feel that we ought to do them anyway. The mind gets cluttered with huge amounts of information, advertising, opinions (the cheapest commodity on earth, everybody has them), dreams, hopes, desires and all the tiny little tasks that we deal with daily.

It's no wonder that people lose sight of their dreams so easily. The things that someone wanted to do as a child, or even as an adult, just seems to slip away in the myriad of tasks that we drown in. There's a better way to do things. That way is to do less, a lot less.

Impossible? Don't we need to do more to get more? Don't we need to work harder to make more money? Well the answer, almost always, is no!

According to the late Earl Nightingale, you can become a world-class expert in a specific field in less than three years if you dedicate only one hour a day to it. Just one hour! But by spending a few minutes here, and a few minutes there on unimportant things we end up losing hours, days, weeks, months and years.

Do less to be more productive. Work smarter, not harder.

Write Down Everything You Do

Begin to reduce the things you do every day. Don't waste time wasting time. Do what is important.

Write down everything that you do in a normal day. Reading the newspaper, watching TV, going to work, working, eating, taking breaks, socializing, sleeping. Write down everything. Also be sure to write down everything that you need to do, not just the everyday things, but things that need to be handled every once in a while as well.

Now take your pen and cross off everything that you don't absolutely need to do. That's right, cross them off your list and don't do them! A part of you is probably protesting, but I'll bet that there is an even bigger part of you that feels happy relief.

I know it seems obvious not to do the things that you don't need to do, but it isn't. There are so many things that we do out of routine that eventually we begin to believe that they're necessary when they're not.

Next, evaluate the tasks that need to be done, but not right away. List these items on a separate sheet of paper to be done at the appropriate time, or to be delegated to someone else. You can mark these items down on a calendar under their appropriate dates so you won't forget to do them.

For things that need to be done, but don't have to be done by you, delegate them to someone else. You can outsource these tasks to someone who is willing to do them for you, usually for a nominal fee. This frees up your time to do the really important things that only you can do and takes a huge weight off your shoulders. Also, by delegating tasks to the appropriate people the results could end up being better than if you had done them yourself.

Finally, take a look at the tasks that you absolutely must do. Write them on your calendar under the appropriate dates and do them! If you've deleted and delegated your tasks properly you'll probably find that there are only one or two things that you absolutely must do every day. By focusing on what is really necessary you'll get more done in a lot less time.
