If you've ever had back pain, you know how hard it is to get relief. And when it involves pain in your legs, it's time to take action.

Basically, there are two kinds of back and leg pain. One is acute or short term back and leg pain which could last from periods of a few days to a few weeks. This type of back pain is very common and may affect four out of five adults in the United States. The other type of back and leg pain is chronic, lasting for more than two months.

Short term problems are bad enough, but chronic back and leg pain may be a symptom of a more serious condition. You should seek the advice of a professional if you suffer from back pain that lasts longer than the normal two weeks to two months (and even if it's short term it's still a good idea to visit a medical professional).

Here are some of the more common causes of back and leg pain:

Lumbar Spine Stenosis

This is a degenerative disease of the lumbosacral spine, which mostly affects adults in the middle aged or elderly age group. The disease is a major cause of morbidity, disability and lost productivity.

In lumbar stenosis, nerve roots in the spine are entrapped within the dural sac, causing serious back and leg pain. This entrapment is caused by progressive hypertrophy of any of the soft tissues that surround the spinal canal.

Also, these degenerative changes could lead to a herniated disc, which is composed of a soft, gelatin-like substance.

Lumbar stenosis mostly affects middle aged and elderly men, although it can also occur in women and younger patients. Back and leg pain is often the earliest symptom of this condition, which many people self-treat. Unfortunately, this results in delay in diagnosis.

So find a good back specialist to help you treat the problem before it gets worse.

Sciatica

Sciatica is a very common condition affecting the sciatic nerve, which runs down from the lower back through the buttocks and into the leg. The pain associated with sciatica can be feel less severe. But since it often caused by a herniated lumbar disc, don't treat it on your own.

The herniation of the disc causes it to push onto one of the sciatic nerve roots. At the onset, the patient usually experiences pain which shoots down the buttocks all the way down through the legs or foot. In some cases, there is even no accompanying back pain.

So, if you suffer from back and leg pain, don't ignore it. There are ways to treat these conditions before the pain gets too bad, so get the help you need!
