Finding New Wines For Your Collection

by Jack Terry

The beauty of so many small batch wineries opening up across the country is that it allows master winemakers to focus on creating the wines they have always dreamt about. Many people do not understand how different two bottles of Merlot may be simply because of a change in elevation where the grapes were grown or the amount of time they are aged before being bottled. Thankfully, the opportunities to discover these new wines are now greater than ever.

The internet has played an integral part in this development in two ways. The first is that it is now easier to learn about the winemakers and their career. There are dozens of laws that protect identity when it comes to labeling and marketing wine in order to protect the proprietary interests of companies. These restrictions, however, do not extend to the public knowledge that is available online. What may seem like a small batch winery producing a new Chardonnay could actually be the creation of a veteran winemaker who spent 20 years making some of the best known California Chardonnay before striking out on his own.

Just like online shopping has revolutionized so many other aspects of the retail business, it has also changed the way people can shop for wine as well. Many states have relaxed the regulations when it comes to shipping and delivering wine to personal addresses. This allows many of the small batch wineries who could previously not afford national distribution to market their wines directly to their customers.

Helping this wine revolution has been wine of the month clubs. These companies offer their customers several different levels of membership. Each club has its own particular focus - wines from a certain region of the country, or a specific varietal - and each month will deliver anywhere from one to three bottles of wine.

These wine clubs have become a great tool both for helping people who are just getting introduced to wine as well as for people who have enjoyed the wine lifestyle for many years. Many of the wines and winemakers they have been interested in are usually only produced in small batches and available directly at the vineyard. Now, instead of having to finance trips across the country just to experience the wines and wineries of California, they can find the club, or clubs, that focus specifically on the wines they are looking for to complete their collection.

With more and more celebrated winemakers branching out on their own, the internet is now your best tool to find out where they used to be, the wines they are most famous for, and how to get their latest wines added to your wine rack.
